Ventus hybridises its Balchik wind portfolio with CATL battery storage

In 2026, Ventus added CATL battery energy storage systems to all three of its operating wind sites near Balchik, in north-eastern Bulgaria. Each of the two Vestas V90 sites (2 MW) now has 4.48 MWh of storage, and the Vestas V112 site (3 MW) has 6.92 MWh. This makes them some of the first hybrid wind-and-storage plants in the country.

The batteries allow our turbines to store electricity when production is high and demand or prices are low, and to deliver it when it is needed most. This reduces curtailment, smooths out the natural fluctuations of wind power and opens up new revenue opportunities in the electricity market.

The Balchik sites have a special place in our history. Our first turbine was installed here in 2010, followed by a second in 2013 and, in 2014, the first Vestas V112 in Bulgaria. With the addition of storage, these established sites are ready for the next stage of the energy transition.

“Hybridising our existing wind farms is the logical next step,” says [name, position]. “Storage lets us get more value from every megawatt-hour we produce, and the experience we gain here goes directly into our new projects.”
